How Many Dudes families are the six tag groups every recruitable Dude belongs to — Action, Employed, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Undead, and Warrior. Tags are not cosmetic: they gate shop Relics, Flyer offers, and boss Trinket planning across 42 Dude Types and 850,000+ legal five-Dude boards. This dude families synergies guide explains breakpoints, sample stacks, and when to mix tags without starving your Relic pool. Verified August 16, 2026 · Steam.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Families | 6 tags — Action, Employed, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Undead, Warrior |
| Team cap | 5 unique Dude Types per run |
| Tag role | Biases Relic shop, Flyer events, and some Trinket routes |
| Classic breakpoint | Bonfire — +1% Max HP per same-Family Dude on board (cap +20%) |

Official Dudex copy gives each Family a personality hook. Strategically, they map to combat jobs: burst (Action), economy (Employed), spells and sustain (Fantasy), tech scaling (Sci-Fi), death loops (Undead), and frontline control (Warrior).

Burst, crit, reposition, and cleave lanes.

Economy, threshold heals, and workplace archetypes.

Fireballs, pulse heals, blessings, and song stacks.

Orbitals, exploits, echoes, and tech scaling.

Death triggers, lifesteal, and summon loops.

Taunt pulses, blocks, and pursuit dashes.
Action Dudes favor crit chains, dashes, and opening taunts. Pirate Dude taunts on fight start and stacks Rum evasion; Ninja Dude adds crit shurikens; Agent Dude rescues endangered allies. Action boards want cleave Relics because many Act nodes throw high enemy counts early.
Finance Dude pays dividends after fights; Manager Dude stores Intern damage for burst expels; Medic Dude and Chef Dude cover sustain without Fantasy tags. Employed shines when you can hit Business Dude investment events and reroll shops with run-long gold.
Wizard Dude fireballs on a timer; Cleric Dude pulse-heals injured clusters; Paladin Dude redirects damage with Blessings. Fantasy is the most forgiving mono route for Tier 1 because healing and AOE show up before you need perfect Relic luck.
Quantum Dude echo-heals; Trooper Dude calls orbital strikes; Hacker Dude stores exploit damage. Sci-Fi Relics often stack off type counts (Cyborg, Trooper) — read Dudex before assuming a generic Attack Power item is better.
Necrodude summons Skeledudes; Frankendude donates HP; Ghost Dude equalizes HP between allies; Lich Dude stores damage in thralls. Undead teams absorb bad nodes better because death and Unconscious triggers become resources, not run-ending wipes.
Knight Dude repeats AoE taunt; Spartan Dude blocks for neighbors; General Dude commands lower allies to taunt. Warrior tags pair with block and toughness Relics (Aspis, Belted Greaves) that scale with Warrior count on board.
Once you know which Family fits your playstyle, the next question is which Relics reward staying on-tag.
Hundreds of Relics exist, but a short list defines dude families synergies in practice. These are the items players hunt when a Flyer offers a third matching type — skipping them for a flashy off-tag rare is a common shop mistake.

+1% Max HP per same-Family Dude (max +20%)

+50% Crit Damage; fireball aura stacks AP

Interns gain Attack Speed and Crit Chance

Knight toughness; team scales with Knight count

Thrall revive and Skeledude procs

Orbital strike becomes laser grenades

Nearby same-type allies buff AP and deflection

Lasso arrival deals Max HP damage in radius
Bonfire and Belted Greaves reward incremental tags — grabbing a third Warrior before a boss is often worth more than a random legendary with no Family keyword. One-off Relics like Andon Cord (any KO triggers team toughness) help mixed boards but do not replace pool density.
If the shop shows a named Relic for a Dude you already recruited, buy before rerolling. Full indexing lives on the relics page; this guide only lists Family-scaling staples launch players repeat in clears.
Tag math feeds the mono vs hybrid decision below — the highest-impact choice you make before Act 2.
Mono-Family maximizes shop density and Breakpoint Relics; hybrid trades peak pool for role flexibility. Neither is wrong — pick based on Flyer quality and whether you already have taunt plus heal covered.

| Route | Tag layout | Best when | Weak when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mono (5/5) | Five same-Family tags | Late Tier 2–3, strong Flyer, Ranch unlocks | First Flyer offered off-spine types you need for defense |
| Strong hybrid (4+1) | Four tags + one flex | Most Tier 1 clears; adds Finance or Knight | You splurge the flex slot on a second carry |
| Dual hybrid (3+2) | Two Families split | Learning tags; Fantasy/Warrior or Undead/Sci-Fi | You need three Relics from three Families |
| Salad (≤2 each) | Tags spread | Never intentional | Shops dry up after Act 1 |
Launch-week hybrid boards — Paladin and Spartan protecting a Ghost healer while Viking and Bard add damage — still hit partial Breakpoints and solve role gaps mono cannot fix on bad Flyer RNG. Hybrid becomes weak only when the flex pick is a third carry instead of economy or taunt.
Relic pools lock to tags you have already recruited. Switching Families after Act 1 starves shops for three nodes. Commit on Flyer two, then use boss Trinkets to specialize — see trinkets for kill order.
If you chose a route, copy a full five-stack next instead of guessing slot five.
These are starter rosters — one per Family — built from launch Dudex tooltips and the tier list. Swap one slot for Finance or Medic if shops never offer your carry.

Blessing flex
Paladin is Fantasy-tagged but listed as a flex in the Warrior stack because Blessing redirect is the fastest fix when Flyers refuse a third Warrior. Purists can swap in Viking Dude for a full Action/Warrior hybrid instead.
When mono is too greedy, these two-Family pairs show up in community clears and long-run footage without sacrificing shop density entirely.
| Pair | Tags | Why it works | Sample flex third |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fantasy + Warrior | 3+2 or 4+1 | Wizard cleave + Knight taunt wall | Finance for economy |
| Undead + Sci-Fi | 3+2 | Skeledudes plus Quantum echo heals | Trooper burst Relics |
| Action + Employed | 3+2 | Pirate taunt + Manager/Finance cash engine | Medic triage |
| Fantasy + Undead | 3+2 | Cleric pulses + Ghost equalize | Lich storage for bosses |
| Sci-Fi + Warrior | 3+2 | Orbital strike + Spartan block | General command taunt |
Your first Flyer should name at least three types from your chosen pair. If the board offers Fantasy/Wizard but you wanted Undead, take the heal/tank flex instead of forcing Necrodude immediately — tag density starts at recruitment, not wishful rerolls.
Full shopping lists and boss routes live on the builds hub. Use this page to choose the pair; use builds to spend gold once tags are set.
Flyers are the dial that keeps those pairs fed — covered next.
Flyers are recruitment events that bias which Dude Types appear and, indirectly, which Relics the shop can roll. Families on your roster act as filter keys — adding Employed tags without an Employed Flyer still works, but you see fewer Employed bodies to attach Relics to.
| Decision | Good habit | Bad habit |
|---|---|---|
| Flyer 1 | Pick the Family you want three tags from | Chasing a lone S-tier off-spine |
| Flyer 2–3 | Complete taunt/heal gaps inside the same pair | Drafting a third carry because damage looked low |
| Shop after recruit | Buy on-tag Relic before reroll | Rerolling for legendary while Bonfire is showing |
| Late Ranch | Pre-post Flyers in Ensemble Mode with a plan | Pre-loading five unrelated S-tier names |
Butterscotch's beginner guidance calls out Understand the Relic Pool — Families and Flyers are the levers. If you need Wizard items, keep Fantasy tags high and avoid recruiting three Sci-Fi types "just because Quantum is S-tier." Pool dilution is silent until the shop whiffs twice.
Higher Tiers of Challenge widen enemy rules but not Family math. Stars on Dude Types unlock Ranch tiers — see the ranch guide — which expand Flyer options without changing how tags interact mid-run.
6 — Action, Employed, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Undead, and Warrior. Every recruitable type belongs to exactly one.
Yes. Hybrid boards are standard for Tier 1. Mono pays off when shops are wide and you can hit five matching tags.
No — it counts same-Family Dudes on board. Three Fantasy tags still get +3% Max HP from Bonfire.
Fantasy or Warrior — Wizard/Cleric or Knight/Spartan cover damage and defense with minimal Relic luck.
Same six tags at launch on Steam, iOS, and Android. Balance patches may shift individual Dudes, not the Family list.
