The how many dudes ranch hub — the Dude Ranch — is where How Many Dudes? meta progression lives between roguelike runs. You return here after every win or loss to spend permanent unlocks, widen your Flyer pool, chase Silver and Gold Stars, and open modes like Daily Dude and Ensemble. This guide maps purchase priority for fresh Steam and mobile accounts. Verified August 16, 2026 · Steam.

Think of the Ranch as your persistent headquarters. Classic runs start with a tutorial fight, then the game asks you to post a Flyer — that UI is already Ranch-side recruitment. Between rounds you re-enter the Ranch to shop Relics, recruit new Dude Types, manage Dude Juice, and eventually spend permanent currency on the upgrade tree.

Losing still adds discoveries to Collection, teaches boss patterns, and often earns cash you would have spent anyway. Launch-week footage shows players re-entering the Ranch after each node with unconscious Dudes sometimes reviving on return — Ranch upgrades can raise that revive chance or stock extra juice. The Ranch is never optional; it is the reason hour ten feels different from hour one.
Each Flyer adds a Family tag to your recruitment pool for the rest of the run. Posting Vampire Dude pulls Undead Relics into shops; posting Cowboy Dude skews Action tags. Ranch meta that unlocks additional Dude Types directly increases what future Flyers can offer — see the beginner guide for first-run Flyer habits before you optimize spend order here.
Once the Ranch loop clicks, the next question is which permanent resources actually buy power — Stars, discoveries, and cash bonuses.
How Many Dudes? separates run-scoped cash from account-wide progression. Mixing them up is how players juice every trash fight, go broke before a boss, and still feel stuck on the same five Dude Types.
| Resource | Scope | Ranch use |
|---|---|---|
| Cash | Single run | Shops, Flyer rerolls, Business Dude investments — not permanent |
| Dude Juice | Run + Ranch stock | Revive Unconscious Dudes — Ranch upgrades add starting juice or revive-on-return |
| Discoveries | Permanent Collection | First-time Dude / Relic / Trinket sightings — gate Pocket Dice and mode unlocks |
| Silver Stars | Permanent per item | Earned from discovery milestones — Collection rewards at 20 Silver |
| Gold Stars | Permanent mastery | Boss-tier clears per Dude Type — unlock Tier 2 and Dude Master-style goals |
| Ranch currency | Permanent spend | Buys Dude unlocks, starting bonuses, Consumables access, Ensemble slots |
Silver Stars mark that you have seen a Dude, Relic, or Trinket in a run. Gold Stars mark that you cleared the mastery fight tied to that entry — usually a harder boss variant. Launch footage explicitly notes Pocket Dice rewards for hitting 20 discoveries, 20 Silver Stars, and 20 Gold Stars separately. That triple track is the spine of Ranch efficiency: play normally for discoveries, then target missing Gold Stars on your main Family.
Business Dude investments compound across runs but spend run cash, not Ranch tokens. The YOLO-style Baller Package achievement is a run-economy spike, not a Ranch node — see tips for when to invest without starving your shop. Ranch upgrades that add starting cash or Pocket Dice multiply every future Business window.
With currencies mapped, the practical question is purchase order on a new account — covered next.
There is no single datamined "best tree" yet, but launch-week consensus and Butterscotch's own beginner post converge on widen drafts before cosmetics and one Family identity before scatter unlocks.
| Account phase | Spend priority | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Runs 1–5 | Any Dude that adds heal or taunt to your Flyer Family | Stabilizes losses while you learn bosses |
| Runs 6–15 | Pocket Dice · starting cash · juice-on-return | Fixes weak Act 1 shops without perfect Relic RNG |
| Runs 16–30 | Remaining Dudes in your main Family + key Relic discoveries | Dense shop pools for builds you actually run |
| Runs 30+ | Tier 2/3 attempts · Gold Star backfill · Ensemble slots | Stars unlock harder content and achievement routes |

Burst, crit, reposition, and cleave lanes.

Economy, threshold heals, and workplace archetypes.

Fireballs, pulse heals, blessings, and song stacks.

Orbitals, exploits, echoes, and tech scaling.

Death triggers, lifesteal, and summon loops.

Taunt pulses, blocks, and pursuit dashes.
Unlocking Cyborg Dude before you have a single Sci-Fi healer feels exciting and plays terrible. Pick Action, Fantasy, Warrior, or Undead from the tier list, unlock missing roles inside that tag, then branch. Ranch is a draft pool expander — it cannot fix a five-type team with zero synergy.
Ranch nodes that stock Dude Juice or improve unconscious revive rates punish bad habits less, but they do not replace Hold the Juice discipline from the official tips. Buy them after your Flyer rhythm stabilizes — usually once Tier 1 Act 2 bosses are routine.
Priority purchases feed directly into Collection milestones — the next section explains the discovery track.
Collection is the in-game encyclopedia — Dudex entries for every Dude, Relic, Trinket, enemy, and odd event. Discovering items fills Silver progress; mastering them fills Gold. Ranch rewards trigger at round numbers that launch streams quote verbatim: 20 discoveries, 20 Silver Stars, 20 Gold Stars, each granting one free Pocket Dice on run start.

Pocket Dice let you reroll shops or Flyers before you have run cash online. Extra dice at run start mean one more chance at a carry Relic or a missing healer Flyer — high leverage for fresh accounts. Treat Collection milestones as Ranch purchases you earn by playing, not a separate grind.
The I've Seen Things achievement (20 Collectibles) and I've Seen Too Much (every Collectible) mirror this track. You will naturally hit 20 by mixing Families; finishing all entries is a late-account goal tied to I'm Every Dude and Trinket Tinkerer on the achievements guide. Do not stall Tier progression waiting for 100% Collection — Stars backfill across Tiers per official guidance.
Event Dudes like Scavenger and Merchant have Ranch-adjacent achievements (Fair Trade, Out of Stock). Loan Relics, restock shops, and note which events appear only after Ranch unlocks — they are discovery fuel, not run-critical power.
Collections widen your options; Tiers of Challenge decide how hard the fights get once you leave the toddler act.
Tier 1 teaches toddlers-to-gods pacing. Tier 2 and Tier 3 spike enemy HP, introduce new bosses like the Killipede, and gate Cosmic Forces-style endgame achievements. The in-game tooltip states you need Gold Stars on five Dude Types to enter Tier 2 — launch footage shows players one Dude short and staying on Tier 1 Endless instead. Steam beta (Aug 3, 2026): an optional beta track can unlock all Tiers without that Gold Star gate — opt in on Steam if you want early Tier 2–3; main branch still uses the five-star rule unless Butterscotch ships it live.
| Tier | When to enter | Ranch prep |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Default — first 5–15 runs | Unlock heal/tank Dudes · Pocket Dice · 20 discovery milestone |
| Tier 2 | Five Gold Stars on distinct Dude Types | Consumables unlocked · Family spine online · boss Trinket plan from trinkets |
| Tier 3 | After Tier 2 wins feel fair | Full Collection push · Ensemble teams · achievement cleanup builds |
Butterscotch encourages touching higher Tiers early because Stars can be backfilled on lower difficulties later. That means a Tier 2 loss that earns one Gold Star on your Wizard is still Ranch-positive. What does not work is jumping to Tier 3 with two unlocked Dude Types and no Consumables — you will stall both Stars and discoveries.
Endless mode inside a Tier continues scaling without the same Ranch credit milestones as campaign clears. Use Endless to test builds and trigger stat achievements (Mega Crits, Cleavin' Steven); use campaign exits when you need Gold Stars or G.O.A.T. gates for The G.O.A.T. and Freight Train trophies.
Higher Tiers also feed mode unlocks — Ensemble is the big Ranch-gated feature below.
Ensemble Mode lets you pre-post Flyers and draft a dream team before the run — the "sample ensemble" unlock launch streams highlight after Collection milestones. It is locked behind discovering more collectibles, the same track that feeds Pocket Dice. Classic mode remains the teaching lab; Ensemble is for executed builds and specific five-Dude achievement teams.
Daily Dude shares a seed leaderboard and has its own achievement (Dude of the Day). It typically opens earlier than Ensemble because it uses fixed rosters. Ranch upgrades that add Dude Types still help you recognize Daily comps even when you cannot pick every slot.
Several Steam achievements demand exact five-Dude lists — Big Pumpers, On The Move, Retaliation, Support Squad. Ensemble is the sane way to run those without praying for Flyer RNG. Each Ensemble player slot Ranch unlock lets you save more pre-posted teams; prioritize slots after your main Family hits Tier 2 Gold Stars.
Single-player · Daily Dude · Ensemble Mode. Daily Dude leaderboard rules are separate from Classic Ranch upgrades — spending meta currency does not change Daily seeds. Mobile parity matches Steam at launch per store listings; Ranch progress syncs with your platform account, not cross-store unless Cloud Save is added later.
Immediately — your first Flyer post after the tutorial is Ranch-side recruitment. Permanent upgrade nodes unlock as you finish runs and spend currency.
Daily uses fixed rosters and shared seeds. Ranch unlocks help you recognize Dudes and Relics, but they do not rewrite Daily team rules.
Starting reroll charges on new runs. Collection milestones at 20 discoveries / 20 Silver Stars / 20 Gold Stars each grant one free Pocket Dice.
Default: earn Gold Stars on five different Dude Types — the in-game Tier gate says so explicitly. Backfill missing Stars on Tier 1 later if needed. Aug 3 2026 Steam beta can unlock all Tiers early if you opt into that branch.
No. Finish one Family spine on the families guide, then branch. Random unlocks dilute shop pools.
Never. Ranch widens options; in-run Relics and Trinkets still decide whether a fight works.
